WASHINGTON, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR), Health Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Gregg Harper (R-MS) today issued the following statement after the D.C. Court of Appeals preserved a lower court’s ruling on the case titled, United States House of Representatives v. Alex M. Azar II, et al., originally known as House v. Burwell.
“After many years, we applaud today’s historic settlement, a key aspect of which preserves the lower court’s ruling that the Obama Administration funded part of the Affordable Care Act illegally, without an appropriation from Congress. A joint investigation by the Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means committees uncovered the fact that the decision to fund these illegal payments was made at the highest levels of the previous administration. During the course of this work, the House sought to hold the Obama Administration accountable and sent a powerful message - Congress alone controls the purse strings. Today’s ruling enshrines the important principles of checks and balances."
