Pallone on Trump Administration’s Short-Term Insurance Plans Expansion

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Aug. 1, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today in response to the Trump Administration’s release of a final rule allowing health insurance companies to offer short-term plans that do not comply with Affordable Care Act (ACA) consumer protection standards:

“The Trump Administration’s expansion of short-term health insurance plans is the latest salvo in their ongoing attack on the American health care system.

“Recklessly expanding junk health plans that do not offer comprehensive coverage will leave families on the hook for thousands of dollars in uncovered health care costs down the road and further destabilize the health insurance markets driving costs up for everyone.

“The answer to rising health care costs cannot be to sell skimpy insurance plans to the American people that put them at risk. While President Trump may have seen fit to spend his career trying to swindle unwitting buyers, selling junk health insurance to the American people is a disgrace."
