Environment & Climate Change Subcommittee Announces PFAS Legislative Hearing

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 8, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee Chairman Paul Tonko (D-NY) announced today that the Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on Wednesday, May 15 at 10:30 am in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building on a series of bills aimed at addressing perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) contamination. The hearing is entitled, “Protecting Americans at Risk of PFAS Contamination & Exposure."

PFAS are a class of industrial chemicals most commonly used in the production of products such as Teflon and Scotchguard, and used for decades by the Department of Defense in firefighting exercises. The toxic chemicals have been linked to cancer, liver failure, birth defects and effects on the immune system, and pose increasingly serious health risks to communities throughout the country as their presence in drinking water and household products has become more prevalent.

Information for this hearing, including the Majority Memorandum, witness list, legislation, testimony, and a live webcast, will be posted HERE as they become available.
