Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Environment and Climate Change Chairman Paul Tonko (D-NY) announced today that the two subcommittees will hold a joint hearing on Thursday, June 20, on the Trump Administration’s efforts to roll back Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards and carbon pollution regulations from light duty cars and trucks.
“Rolling back our clean car standards threatens American jobs, public health, the climate and consumers. The automobile industry doesn’t even support the Trump Administration’s proposal - no one does, except the oil companies that stand to profit from Americans spending more at the pump filling up less efficient cars," said Pallone, Schakowsky and Tonko. “We look forward to questioning both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency about this senseless proposal."
In August 2018, the Trump Administration announced it was abandoning long-term fuel economy and carbon pollution standards for passenger cars and light trucks, and EPA’s own experts panned the decision. Last week the automobile manufacturing industry requested that the Administration reconsider the rollback, warning that the Trump Administration’s proposal would result in “untenable" market instability, jeopardize American leadership in manufacturing and innovation, and worsen environmental conditions.
