Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) blasted today’s proposed rule from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rolling back methane emissions standards for the oil and gas industry:
“Today’s proposed rule is unconscionable. Even for an Administration with a pattern of catering to corporate polluters, the proposal to eliminate federal government requirements limiting methane emissions is wildly irresponsible and reckless.
“Many within the fossil fuel industry understand this, and that’s why Exxon, Shell and BP America urged EPA to maintain rigorous methane rules. Yet the Trump Administration is defying science, common sense and the express concerns of major industry players to disassemble critical public health and safety protections.
“Contrary to the President’s recent claim that he’s ‘an environmentalist,’ this proposed rollback, like so many of his other proposals, will accelerate climate change and endanger the health and welfare of all Americans."
