Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today issued the following statement on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) health advisory regarding the use of e-cigarettes:
“The CDC advisory issued today should serve as a warning to all those using e-cigarette products, especially teens and young adults, that these products could cause grave harm, and refraining from use may be the best course of action. I remain deeply concerned by the reports of severe lung illnesses associated with e-cigarette use. While we need more information on these life-threatening illnesses and the long-term health impacts of using e-cigarette products, people may avoid risks by refraining from use. The Committee will continue with its investigation into the health risks associated with these products and the growing crisis."
Earlier this week, Pallone requested a briefing from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration on their response to the growing number of pulmonary illnesses related to e-cigarette use and a death recently reported in Illinois. As of August 27 of this year, 215 potential cases in 25 states have been reported to CDC. The Chairman also launched a Committee investigation last week into e-cigarette manufacturers.
