E&C to Hold Joint Subcommittee Hearing with Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 17, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Energy Subcommittee Chairman Bobby L. Rush (D-IL), and Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee Chairman Paul Tonko (D-NY) announced today that the two subcommittees will hold a joint hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 10 am in the John D. Dingell Room, 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building to conduct oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The hearing is entitled, “Keeping Us Safe and Secure: Oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission."

“This summer, NRC staff proposed troubling changes to the agency’s Reactor Oversight Process, which dictates the safety and security measures at our nation’s nuclear power facilities. Fortunately, NRC has taken some action following concerns voiced by the Committee, but several disturbing proposals remain. Congress must also ensure the decommissioning process is working for all stakeholders as more nuclear plants shut down," said the three Committee leaders. “We look forward to addressing these issues with the Commissioners and discussing how we can continue to facilitate safe, secure nuclear power."

In July, Committee leaders sent a letter to NRC expressing deep concern over proposed changes to its Reactor Oversight Process, including one recommendation that would have allowed for industry self-assessments.

Information for this hearing, including the Committee Memorandum, witness list, testimony and a live webcast will be posted HERE as they become available.
