Pallone on Trump Administration Initiating Formal Process of Withdrawing U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Nov. 4, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) blasted the Trump Administration today for submitting a formal notification to the United Nations initiating the process of withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord:

“Rarely have we seen a president so flagrantly betray the trust and economic futures of the American people, but President Trump has no shame. With his actions today, President Trump is engaging in dangerous, willful ignorance and asking Americans to ignore the sum total of all scientific evidence. It’s disgraceful. On this issue and many others, it is clear President Trump is living in an alternate reality with his alternate facts.

“History’s long gaze will look back on this moment as an utter abdication of leadership and yet another example of this Administration’s betrayal of our allies. America’s global credibility and allegiances are strained to a near-breaking point, and this kind of blatant disregard for our global interests explains why.

“Today President Trump is offering no hope for the families devastated by record-breaking wildfires, storms, floods and blackouts - so Congress must. In May, the House passed H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, blocking U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. My Committee led the charge on this legislation, and today I again call on the Senate to take it up without delay. The world is watching."
