E&C Announces Joint Subcommittee Hearing on Disinformation Online and a Country in Crisis on June 24

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on June 11, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced today that the Communications and Technology and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittees will hold a joint remote hearing on Wednesday, June 24, on disinformation online.

“As our nation battles both COVID-19 and racial injustice, online disinformation is exacerbating injury, death and division among the American people," said Pallone, Doyle and Schakowsky. “Social media platforms have failed to take sufficient steps to address disinformation while the President is actively promoting dangerous falsehoods and conspiracies. The country needs and deserves better, and we look forward to hearing from experts on what can be done to minimize, and ultimately end, the spread of dangerous disinformation and misinformation online."

Additional details will be announced the week before the hearing.
