E&C Republican Leaders: We must work together if we expect to defeat COVID-19

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 16, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Greg Walden (R-OR), Health Subcommittee Republican Leader Dr. Michael Burgess (R-TX), and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Republican Leader Brett Guthrie (R-KY) released the following statement on Committee Democrats’ continued attempts to politicize the search for a COVID-19 vaccine and the administration’s response efforts.

“The actions taken by Democrats fly in the face of public health and amount to nothing less than election-year fear mongering, plain and simple. The scientific, clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine have four to five times more participants than a normal clinical trial for a vaccine. Independent science and data panels will make the final determinations on efficacy and safety matters. When approved, these COVID-19 vaccines will be safe and effective, as determined by career scientists and public health experts. Scaring the American people is disturbing and wrong. Shame on any elected officials who would take advantage of what they see as an opportunity to score political points over the responsibility we all have to help our nation navigate the deadliest pandemic in a century. We must work together if we expect to defeat COVID-19, and we must let science and facts lead the way." said Walden, Burgess, and Guthrie.

Last month, Walden, Burgess, and Guthrie detailed the steps being taken to ensure a safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine in an op-ed for The Hill. Read it HERE.
