Walden, Kinzinger Statement on China Task Force Report

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 30, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Greg Walden (R-OR) and Energy and Commerce Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), member of the House Republican China Task Force, released the following statement on the release of the China Task Force report.

“The Chinese Communist Party will stop at nothing to ensure global dominance through their ‘Made in China 2025’ plan and efforts to be the world’s top economy by 2049. Lying to the world about the coronavirus pandemic that originated on their soil is only the latest example of their intent to undermine the U.S. and our allies," said Walden and Kinzinger. “We must meet this moment and overcome China to ensure freedom and liberty remain the world’s defining global principles, which is why we are proud to join our House Republican colleagues in releasing today’s China Task Force Report. Included in this report are recommendations to stop supply chain threats, lead in emerging technologies, bolster our national security, maintain our energy independence, grow our economy, and not only compete - but win - against China. We look forward to working together to implement these recommendations so we can ensure American prosperity and hold the CCP and the People’s Republic of China accountable for their repeated actions to undermine the U.S."

Background:

The China Task Force was created by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and chaired by Foreign Affairs Committee Republican Leader Michael McCaul (R-TX).

The task force was created because - despite our four decades of engagement to respect geographic balance, human rights, and economic fairness - China has failed to follow the norms set by the community of nations. A decade ago, the CCP took advantage of the global financial crisis to expand its economic ambitions, and now, we see China repeating this game plan as the world recovers from the global pandemic.

Task force key findings and recommendations parallel many of the priorities we have worked on in a bipartisan fashion. They include:

* Securing our country’s leadership by our American companies being able to deploy emerging technologies like AI, quantum, 5G, blockchain, and autonomous vehicles;

* Securing development and production of crucial medicines, medical supplies, ingredients, tests and vaccines;

* Securing our energy leadership in order to be a global counter against the PRC, particularly on nuclear energy utilization and critical mineral supply; and,

* Securing data protections and ensuring transparency for Americans so that the CCP cannot access and manipulate information flow at home or abroad.
