Washington, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader for the 116th Congress Greg Walden (R-OR), Republican Leader for the 117th Congress Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), and Communications and Technology Subcommittee Republican Leader Bob Latta (R-OH) released the following statement on House passage of a resolution to reaffirm the House’s commitment to media diversity.
“Our local broadcasters provide important and timely information tailored to the unique communities they serve, and are often Americans’ primary source of local news. We must ensure our local broadcast industry can keep up amid today’s dynamic media market and that local broadcasters reflect the communities they serve. We are proud to join our colleagues in reaffirming our commitment to media diversity and will continue working to promote diversity in media ownership across U.S. communities," said Walden, Rodgers, and Latta.
Today, the House of Representatives unanimously passed H.Res. 549 by Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) to reaffirm the commitment of the House of Representatives to media diversity and pledging to work with media entities and diverse stakeholders to develop common ground solutions to eliminate barriers to media diversity.
In October of this year, Rep. Walden, a former local radio station owner and advocate for local broadcasters, wrote an op-ed for The Hill explaining the importance of local media diversity and to promote his bill to lift up new voices in the industry.
