Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced today that the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee will hold a fully remote hearing on Thursday, February 4, at 12 p.m. (EST) entitled “Safeguarding American Consumers: Fighting Scams and Fraud During the Pandemic."
“We are deeply concerned by growing reports of fraudsters and scammers targeting American consumers, increasingly using fears about COVID-19 and related financial struggles as a hook for cheating people out of their hard-earned money. These bad actors prey on the vulnerable and take advantage of the generous. Stopping scammers and returning money to victims is a core part of the Federal Trade Commission’s mission that must be preserved and strengthened - during the pandemic and beyond," said Pallone and Schakowsky. “We look forward to hearing from expert witnesses about what must be done to meaningfully combat scammers and protect consumers."
