Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today after the U.S. Supreme Court failed to intervene to block the implementation of Texas’ unconstitutional abortion law, SB 8, which now takes effect and bans all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy:
“Today the Supreme Court willfully allowed an unconstitutional ban on abortion to take effect in Texas. This law is now the most extreme restriction on abortion in the country and will result in the loss of access to care for millions of women. Not only does it directly conflict with established Supreme Court precedent, but it is made all the more cruel by its explicit invitation to individual residents to sue patients and physicians who seek or provide abortion care.
“The alarming failure of our nation’s highest court to uphold the law of the land gives license for other states to follow suit, providing the blueprint for a broader, unprecedented assault on access to abortion. This is a tragic day for reproductive freedom, but I stand shoulder to shoulder with all those committed to opposing this appalling violation of Americans’ rights."
