EPA seeks community input from those affected by lead contamination

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a listening session for Region 6 to address the draft strategy.

According to an EPA press release, the strategy aims to reduce lead exposure and disparities across U.S. communities.

“Underserved and overburdened communities are often disproportionately exposed to lead, which can cause life-long negative effects,” EPA Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Land and Emergency Management Carlton Waterhouse said, per the release. “Today, we are inviting all communities exposed to lead and other stakeholders to share their perspectives so that EPA can ensure that our draft strategy to reduce lead exposures and disparities in U.S. communities is as comprehensive as possible."

The Region 6 session will allow communities and stakeholders in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas to provide comments on EPA’s plan, according to the release.

The release also states that the draft strategy was first released for public comment on Oct. 28, 2021.

According to the release, registered members of the public are allowed to share comments at the meeting, and the EPA said they are serious in seeking input from communities that have been affected by lead contamination.
