WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today praised passage of legislation reauthorizing The Global Food Security Act, which will now go to the president’s desk to be signed into law. The bill also reauthorizes the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Emergency Food Security Program (EFSP). USAID has relied increasingly upon EFSP to avoid constraints that would prevent delivery of emergency food aid through the Food for Peace program.
“Flexibility in emergency food aid is critical for responding in emergency situations, like Syria, where U.S. commodities simply cannot reach," said Corker. “Reauthorization of these programs will enable continued progress toward eliminating further inefficiencies in food aid delivery that prevent us from using the same dollars to feed millions more hungry people more quickly."
