Democrats on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee approved their planned government takeover of our nation’s health care system this morning after forcing an overnight legislative session to meet their arbitrary deadline for committee passage this week. Three Democrats joined Republicans in unanimous opposition to the plan. Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the panel’s top Republican, issued the following statement:
“Health care is perhaps the most critical issue facing workers, families, and small businesses today. It accounts for one-sixth of our nation’s economy, and it’s no exaggeration to say that what happens with health care could mean the difference between economic recovery and prolonged job destruction.
“Democrats’ stubborn insistence on voting when the ink had scarcely dried on the page belies a frantic rush to ratify unsound policy before its inadequacies - and consequences - could be fully realized. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office revealed yesterday the legislation’s utter failure to get health care spending under control, a fatal flaw that will wreak havoc on our economy for years to come - particularly when paired with a punitive small business tax and countless job-killing mandates.
“Health care is too important to get wrong. Republicans are offering commonsense solutions to make health care more affordable and accessible, and we stand ready to work with Democrats on meaningful bipartisan reform. The American people deserve better than the Democrats’ frenzied, partisan antics."
