On Thursday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), will hold a hearing entitled “Reviewing Workers’ Compensation for Federal Employees." The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building
Enacted in 1916, the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA) provides workers’ compensation benefits to federal employees who become ill or injured through work-related activity. Approximately three million federal employees are currently covered by the program. During the last fiscal year, an estimated $2.8 billion in compensation was paid to beneficiaries. Despite the size and cost of the program, it has not been significantly updated since 1974. Responsible reforms are needed to ensure the program best meets the needs of workers and taxpayers
Thursday’s hearing will give members an opportunity to examine the current state of the federal workers’ compensation program, and review reforms proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor aimed at improving the program.
