Kline, Rokita Statement on New Head Start Performance Standards

The following was published by the House Committee on Education and Labor on Sept. 1, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) and Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee Chairman Todd Rokita (R-IN) issued the following joint statement in response to the Department of Health and Human Services’ final rule revising the Head Start Program Performance Standards:

Head Start is an important lifeline for many vulnerable children and families. While we are encouraged the department appears to have taken into account some of the concerns we and others raised with its initial regulatory proposal, we continue to question some of the policies in the final rule. We are committed to strengthening this program for families and taxpayers and will carefully review the rule to ensure it results in the kind of responsible support children and their families need.
