Republican Leader of the Committee on Education and Labor, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), issued the following statement after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report that includes several recommendations the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) should take to address long-standing failures to meet the needs of students with disabilities:
“As a former educator and lifelong advocate for students, I feel strongly that every child should have access to an excellent education. The report released by the GAO is troubling. Their findings show that BIE schools failed to account for 38 percent of special education services for students with disabilities, with one school failing to provide any services whatsoever. I’m encouraged to hear that BIE acknowledges these long-standing problems and is working to correct them. Now, more than ever, we need to show up for students during this time of uncertainty."
