Today, House Democrats passed the Senate-amended partisan budget reconciliation scheme, which allows only nine percent of $1.9 trillion to go toward COVID-19 related public health initiatives, while the rest funds Democrat pet projects. Following the vote, Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued this statement:
"This so-called COVID-19 'relief' bill is a reckless disregard of the needs of the American people.
"In the midst of a pandemic, Congress should be able to work together to deliver targeted and temporary relief for all Americans, as we have before. Instead, Democrats worked unilaterally to ram through legislation that does far more for left-wing interests than it does the American people. This bill lacks commonsense provisions to help our schools safely reopen immediately, despite the science indicating we can do so. America’s students need a leader to stand up for them, not an administration that bends to the will of teachers’ unions.
"Furthermore, the bill includes a reckless, uncapped bailout of failing multiemployer pension plans, which have been mismanaged long before the COVID-19 pandemic. The taxpayer bailout fails to address necessary systemic reforms to ensure that future workers and retirees will receive the retirement benefits they were promised."
