Energy ministers from the United States, Canada, Qatar, Norway and Saudi Arabia met in Houston March 9 to launch a Net-Zero Producers Forum.
The NPF, which was announced April 23, 2021, during President Joe Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate, is a partnership of major gas-producing nations dedicated to working toward net-zero emissions while searching for renewable energy solutions. These are steps taken to mitigate the climate crisis the planet finds itself in.
“Department of Energy was proud to host the first Net-Zero Producers Forum ministerial in Houston, Texas, a town that powered America’s past and has the potential to lead our clean energy future,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “The NPF ministerial meetings represent an opportunity for major energy producers to lead the way in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 — averting the worst effects of climate change and supercharging economic opportunities for the global workforce.”
During the March 9 meeting, the ministers reviewed the NPF's objectives and framework, and members launched a group that will allow industry stakeholders to have conversations regarding the best practices in regards to emissions.
The NPF will identify the role of industry leaders in creating ways to phase out fossil emissions while reducing them in the interim.
