Springfield, MO - U.S. Marshal Mark S. James, Western District of Missouri, announces the arrest of fugitive Markeivous Smith, on January 18th, 2019, in Springfield.
Markeivous Smith, of Springfield, Missouri, was charged, in Fulton County, Georgia with Murder and Armed Robbery in a case investigated by the Atlanta, Georgia Police Department. A warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest on January 15th, 2019. The charges stemmed from a December 3rd robbery and shooting in Atlanta, which left 22 year old Darryl Dennis dead. Smith was charged in the crime along with co-defendants, Dedric Garrett and Marcius Reed.
The U.S. Marshals Service-Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force began searching for all three fugitives shortly after they were charged. U.S. Marshals tracked Smith to Springfield, Missouri, where investigators with the Marshals Service-Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force joined in the search, along with multiple units from the Springfield Police Department. On January 18th, U.S. Marshals Service and Springfield Police investigators located Smith at a business on East Kearney Street, where he was arrested without incident. On January 23rd, investigators with the U.S. Marshals Service-Great Lakes Task Force tracked Smith’s co-defendant, Marcius Reed, to an address in Belleville, Illinois, where he was also arrested. Dedric Garrett was arrested in Atlanta earlier in the investigation.
The arrests of these fugitives represents the culmination of an extensive investigative effort by the U.S. Marshals Service-Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force, the Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, and the Springfield, Missouri Police Department.
The U.S. Marshals Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force-Springfield Division, operates in conjunction with members of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the Christian County Sheriff’s Office, the Springfield Police Department, and the Joplin Police Department. Marshal James stated, “We are very appreciative of the support the Springfield Police Department brought to the apprehension of this dangerous fugitive. This is just another example of the value of the relationships between the agency-members comprising the task force."
The task force objectives are to seek out and arrest fugitives charged with violent crimes, drug offenses, sex offenders and other serious felonies. Nationally the United States Marshals Service fugitive programs are carried out with local law enforcement in 94 district offices, 85 local fugitive task forces, 7 regional task forces, as well as a growing network of offices in foreign countries.
