Washington, DC -Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement from the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board that it has dismissed its complaint against Boeing after the company and its workers reached an agreement to keep jobs in Washington State:
The deal reached this week is a victory for American workers and a vindication of their rights under federal law not to be discriminated against. It shows that American companies can work together with their workers toward common goals. I commend Boeing’s management for sitting down with their workers to negotiate a sensible solution that will increase production and protect American jobs. I am encouraged by the National Labor Relations Board’s responsible handling of its duties as mandated by Congress, and I hope our Committee will follow suit and conclude its actions relating to this matter.
The Agreement reached this week with Boeing management and ratified by Machinist Union members will ensure that Boeing builds its new 737MAX airplane in Washington State with improved conditions, while maintaining a new production line in South Carolina.
The NLRB brought charges earlier this year against Boeing for moving its production line to South Carolina in retaliation for workers in Washington State exercising their rights to organize under federal laws. Oversight Committee Darrell Issa launched an investigation of the NLRB earlier this year for attempting to enforce these laws.
