Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to an announcement that the U.S. Postal Service and the American Postal Workers Union have agreed to offer employees retirement incentives.
“I applaud the efforts by the U.S. Postal Service and the American Postal Workers Union to responsibly and compassionately reduce their workforce in line with declining mail volumes. Although this is a positive step in the right direction, House Republicans failed to do their jobs by leaving town without passing comprehensive postal reform legislation and failing to give the Postal Service the tools it needs to avoid default."
According to the agreement, the Postal Service will offer $15,000 retirement incentive packages with a $10,000 initial payment to be made in May 2013 and the rest to be paid in May of 2014. Individuals opting to take advantage of this offer are required to sign up by December 2012 and must retire by Jan. 31, 2013.
