WASHINGTON - The House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Government Operations, chaired by Rep. John Mica (R-FL), will continue its examination of vacant or underutilized federal real properties with a field hearing held at a vacant, GSA-owned warehouse in Washington, D.C.
The warehouse, located at 49 L Street S.E., Washington, D.C., has been empty since September 2009 and costs taxpayers approximately $70,000 a year to maintain. The hearing will examine the empty building’s cost to taxpayers and highlight the on-going problems with the collection and accuracy of data contained in the Federal Real Property Portfolio (FRPP).
The Subcommittee on Government Operations has previously held two hearings on federal real property in February and March 2013. Federal real-property has been on the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) “high-risk list" since 2003 due to concerns about the reliability of real property data. GAO estimates that vacant or underutilized properties cost taxpayers $1.67 billion annually.
