Washington, DC -- Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to President Obama's address tonight to the nation regarding Syria:

“I commend President Obama for addressing the American people tonight and presenting a more complete understanding as to why President Assad's use of chemical weapons impacts our national security interests and compels us to consider the moral consequences of inaction. I am hopeful that the international community can pursue a diplomatic solution -- a direct result of the President’s credible threat of military action -- and we can get international monitors into Syria immediately to eliminate all of the country’s chemical weapons."
