Washington, DC -Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after participating in an open hearing, followed by a classified briefing for all House Members, on the recent cyber attack against the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) that affected more than 4 million federal workers:
“I now feel more strongly than ever that the Oversight Committee must hear directly from OPM’s two contractors-KeyPoint and USIS-either in transcribed interviews or in formal testimony before the Committee.
“I also believe the Committee should now request a much more detailed, comprehensive, and classified briefing from government IT experts about the specific vulnerabilities that contractors pose to our government’s cyber security.
“Chairman Chaffetz and I co-hosted today’s classified briefing together, and I hope to continue working closely with him in a bipartisan manner on this issue, which is critical to our national security."
During today’s hearing, both Ranking Member Cummings and Committee Member Matthew Cartwright raised questions about public press accounts relating to how cyber spies were able to gain access to OPM’s data systems.
