Cummings Requests Information about General Flynn’s Foreign Contacts

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on Aug. 3, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Lt. General Michael Flynn’s former business partner, Bijan R. Kian, requesting documents to assist in the Committee’s investigation of General Flynn’s unreported foreign contacts and foreign business relationships.

In January 2016, General Flynn submitted an application for a five-year security clearance reinvestigation, in which he listed Mr. Kian as a personal reference. During the background investigation process, Mr. Kian was interviewed by FBI investigators.

According to the March 14, 2016, Report of Investigation, Mr. Kian told investigators that he had been a “Friend/Professional Colleague" of General Flynn since 2008; “that FLYNN has traveled to the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Japan, and Russia for pleasure and work"; and “that FLYNN would have work related foreign person contacts." Additionally, the Report stated that Mr. Kian “advised that FLYNN would have professional work relationships with foreign businesses," but that “FLYNN did not have foreign government connections."

In today’s letter, Cummings requested all documents and communications referring or relating to General Flynn’s “work related foreign person contacts," “professional work relationships with foreign businesses," and foreign travel.
