Raskin, Cummings, Committee Members, and Hispanic Caucus to Hold Press Conference on Treatment of Immigrant Children

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on July 9, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. -Tomorrow, on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, will host a press conference on the treatment of immigrant children at the Southern border. Raskin will be joined by Chairman Elijah E. Cummings, Committee and Congressional Hispanic Caucus members who visited migrant detention centers last week, and a mother whose 19-month-old daughter died after spending nearly three weeks in an ICE detention facility.

After the press conference, the Subcommittee will hold a hearing examining how the Trump Administration’s deterrence policies are creating a humanitarian crisis and jeopardizing the health and safety of the migrant children and families. The Subcommittee also will address the gross lack of accountability at detention facilities. For months, press reports have detailed dangerous conditions at several detention facilities, including Clint, McAllen, and Homestead.
