Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued this statement following the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) decision to pass a rule banning infant inclined sleep products ahead of next week’s Committee hearing on the grave flaws in the U.S. consumer product safety system:
“I applaud the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s decision to ban infant inclined sleep products. The Commission’s action is an important step forward that will protect Americans from dangerous products that have been connected with the tragic deaths of close to 100 infants.
“Much more remains to be done to address the fundamental weaknesses in federal oversight and enforcement that allowed these dangerous products to reach consumers in the first place. The Committee’s hearing next week will examine how Fisher-Price’s Rock ‘n Play inclined sleeper was allowed to stay on the market for ten years before being recalled, despite the serious risk of injury and death that it posed to infants."
On Aug. 13, 2019, the Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the recall of infant inclined sleep products that had been reportedly tied to dozens of infant deaths.
On Monday, June 7, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. ET the Oversight Committee will hold a hybrid hearing on the Committee’s investigation into dozens of infant deaths associated with Fisher-Price’s Rock ‘n Play Sleeper and grave flaws in the U.S. consumer product safety system.
