Hice: IGs Must Investigate Federal Agencies’ Work-from-Home Shortfalls

WASHINGTON-Today, Subcommittee on Government Operations Ranking Member Jody Hice (R-Ga.) called on Inspectors General from numerous federal agencies to assess the impact of telework on federal agencies’ mission, employee performance, and service to the American people during the pandemic.

The Biden Administration recently announced it plans to expand telework, remote work, and flexible work schedules but has failed to provide an assessment on how this will impact the federal government’s efficiency and effectiveness.

“Thanks to Operation Warp Speed, millions of Americans are safely returning to the workplace. Many federal bureaucrats, meanwhile, are still working from home thanks to the Biden Administration’s lack of urgency in getting agencies back to a normal operating status. It is clear that the unprecedented number of federal employees working remotely has significantly contributed to massive delays, inefficiencies, and declines in performance - all to the detriment of American taxpayers. Incredibly, the White House is now considering expanding work-from-home options for federal employees even before we have a clear picture of how it will impact Americans. I’m calling on inspectors general to investigate the overall impact telework had on our federal agencies during this pandemic and report back to Congress so we can accurately assess how to move forward before rushing into foolhardy reforms," said Ranking Member Hice.

Hice sent letters to the Inspectors Generals for the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, the Intelligence Community, Department of the Treasury, Department of Education, Department of Energy, and Department of State.
