Comer Statement on Passage of Inspector General Independence and Empowerment Act

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on June 29, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON-Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Inspector General Independence and Empowerment Act (H.R. 2662) to empower partisan inspectors general:

“The recent politicization of inspectors generals combined with the Democrats’ bill is the perfect storm to undermine the effectiveness and trust the American people and Congress have in our inspectors general. There are reasonable, commonsense updates Congress can make to our laws, but rather than work together on bipartisan solutions, the House Democrat majority passed a bill that is once again about President Trump. This bill is all about empowering partisan inspectors general to subpoena former Trump Administration officials for a show and a few headlines. It’s also about preventing presidents from rightfully removing ineffective IGs. This bill isn’t good governance, and it will erode the credibility of the inspector general community."
