Maloney, DeSaulnier Issue Statement on Additional States Reaching a Settlement with Purdue Pharma

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on July 8, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and senior Committee Member Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, issued this statement following news that additional state Attorneys General reached an agreement with Purdue Pharma on a bankruptcy settlement:

“Allowing the Sacklers to obtain legal immunity through Purdue’s bankruptcy would be a tragic miscarriage of justice. While the settlement will provide much-needed transparency about the Sacklers’ central role in creating, fueling, and profiting from America’s opioid epidemic, we remain troubled that the Sacklers are poised to escape accountability yet again. We are committed to reforming non-debtor releases to ensure that bad actors like the Sacklers are prohibited from abusing our bankruptcy system to evade personal responsibility. It is imperative that we reform the system to prevent this kind of injustice, and we will continue working tirelessly until Congress does just that."
