Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, issued the following statement after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved continued sales of R.J. Reynolds’ high-nicotine Vuse e-cigarettes:
“FDA has turned its back on the public health by approving a high-nicotine e-cigarette. Many countries around the world have capped the amount of nicotine allowed in e-cigarettes, which allowed them to avoid a youth vaping epidemic. I’ve been pushing to lower nicotine levels in the United States for years. FDA has ignored the data and missed another opportunity to address the youth vaping epidemic."
On June 23, 2021, the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy held a hearing entitled “An Epidemic Continues: Youth Vaping in America." Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock testified that “fewer kids would become addicted to e-cigarettes if there were no e-cigarettes in the U.S. with over 20 mg/mL of nicotine." The Vuse e-cigarettes FDA approved today contain 48 mg/mL of nicotine.
