WASHINGTON - Yesterday, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas held a virtual meeting with the newly appointed Foreign Minister of Guatemala, Mario Adolfo Búcaro Flores, to discuss how to better manage irregular migration and address its root causes, and enhance related U.S. support and technical assistance programs. Secretary Mayorkas and Foreign Minister Búcaro agreed on the importance of close cooperation to counter human smuggling through information sharing, investigations and prosecutions, and countering coyotes’ messaging to make clear that the U.S. border is not open and individuals who migrate irregularly to the U.S. border will be subject to expulsion or removal, consistent with law. Secretary Mayorkas thanked the Foreign Minister for Guatemala’s continued cooperation and partnership on shared priorities.
