The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration announced more than $400 million in grant funding has been made available to improve U.S. transportation.
According to a March 14 news release, the FTA will award $409.3 million in grant funding to 70 projects in 39 states throughout the nation to focus on modernizing bus fleets in order to help make public transportation more efficient for those that need it. Grant funding will support advancing the electrification of buses, improving reliability of bus systems and routes and boosting safety.
"These grants will help people in communities large and small get to work, get to school and access the services they need," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. "Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable, clean public transportation – and thanks to the president’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are bringing modern buses to communities across America."
"Transit agencies are replacing aging buses and facilities with newer, cleaner infrastructure that is more efficient to operate and maintain," FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez said. "Modern buses, especially those powered with electric batteries or fuel cells, improve air quality and help us address the climate crisis."
The Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program received an additional $5.1 billion in funding from the Bipartisan infrastructure bill and will be released over the course of five years in the form of competitive grants.
