The U.S. Secretary of Commerce recently toured the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) MIT.nano lab as President Joe Biden's administration is calling for increased domestic production of semiconductors.

On March 2, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo discussed the need for increased domestic production and research of semiconductors during her tour of the MIT.nano lab, according to a press release.

"We have seen first-hand the risks we face from overreliance on China in our supply chains," Raimondo said in the release. "Revitalizing US domestic manufacturing capabilities in core areas such as semiconductors is critical to keeping the United States competitive globally."

The Secretary visited the lab in an effort to build agreement on the Bipartisan Innovation Act.

The bill, if passed, would provide $52 billion in Congressional funding to domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

"The Bipartisan Innovation Act is essential to creating jobs and strengthening our manufacturing sector, which will create good-paying jobs and bolster our supply chains," Raimondo added. "Every day we wait is a day we fall further behind. The students and researchers at the MIT.nano lab are at the cutting edge of their field. It’s imperative that the United States continues investing in education-to-workforce pipelines in science and technology to bolster our national security and help our economy prosper."
