Transportation Security Administration is launching a new, cutting-edge passenger identification system at Los Angeles International Airport security checkpoints using facial recognition to verify the identity of guests.
In a March 18 news release, the TSA announced the new system Justin Erbacci, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, believes will allow airports in Los Angeles to set new industry standards for safety, security and efficiency by leaning further into the use of biometrics and new technologies.
"As a longtime partner with TSA on innovation, LAX has led the way in developing, testing and implementing new technology and procedures which enhance safety and streamline the guest experience," Erbacci said. “By leaning further into the use of biometrics and the use of new technologies, we once again are setting new industry standards for safety, security and efficiency."
According to Keith Jeffries, TSA federal security director at LAX, the TSA will rely on screening operations and enhancing the capabilities of existing technologies to ensure the highest level of security effectiveness within airports. Through an increase in automation combined and a reduction in physical contact between travelers and TSA officers, the new identity verification process will create a smoother, safer, airport experience, according to the release.
Jeffries also expressed his gratitude for the leadership at LAX and their eagerness to embrace the next generation of technologies at the airport, a goal LAX has reportedly been working toward to implement emerging security technologies through its partnership with TSA.
