Additional Prescribed Fires Planned for National Park 2022

The National Park Service is adding two prescribed fires to this spring’s planned burning schedule. This brings the total planned prescribed fires to eight for the spring.

In Gary’s Miller neighborhood, the park will burn 16 acres of land immediately surrounding the Douglas Center for Environmental Education on North Lake Street. The purpose of this burn is to reduce the threat of wildfire to the education center by creating defensible space around the structure.

Immediately south of the CSX rail tracks, near the US Highway 20 and Indiana Toll Road interchange, the park will burn 38 acres of land as part of a natural resource restoration project.  On Wednesday, March 15, the National Park successfully burned 42 acres of land at West Beach in Portage, and also burned 56 acres at Mnoke Prairie in Porter.
