President Joe Biden’s fiscal year 2023 budget will enable the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to scale its efforts to serve all Americans with the delivery of accurate climate products.
Rick Spinard, NOAA administrator, said the funding bill allows the agency to build on its research, forecast and observations, according to a March 29 release.
“The next decade is a critical time to address the climate crisis. We have a small window to shift to a carbon-neutral economy and hold climate impacts in check,” Spinard said.
This is one step in the budget process, but the funding proposal is a down payment to build the climate-ready nation Spinard said is needed, according to the release.
“I’m ready to begin a new fiscal year that will enhance our agency’s ability to protect lives, livelihoods and lifestyles,” he said.
Spinard called this a once-in-a-generation opportunity “to address the climate crisis, boost resilience and promote economic growth by building a Climate Ready Nation,” the release said. This can be done by using the increased funding to support all of government with the delivery of climate products and services, fostering environmental stewardship and sustainable economic development, alongside advancing diversity, equity and inclusion.
