A public education campaign stressing the importance of mental health-friendly workplaces was unveiled March 29 at the Society of Human Resource Management’s Workplace Policy Conference in Washington, D.C.

The “Mental Health at Work: What Can I Do?” campaign uses a public service announcement to highlight how everyone from an employee to a CEO can promote workplace well-being, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release.

“Today, one in five working-age Americans has a mental health condition. As America recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health-friendly workplaces will be more important than ever,” U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh said. “This timely public education campaign reminds us that we all have a role to play, and that we all benefit from flexible, supportive workplaces that promote good mental health.”

Workplace well-being can refer to, but is not limited to, setting the tone for an inclusive workplace, to providing and requesting assistance and accommodations to being a source of support to peers and colleagues, the release said.

A video PSA was being distributed nationally to television and radio stations. Related materials, including posters, video interviews, workplace mental health resources and tips for using the materials within the workplace are available for download, the release said.
