Amistad National Recreation Area Implements Changes to Operations

Amistad National Recreation Area will not have any closures of campgrounds on Easter weekend, the Visitor Center is going cashless, and use of the dump station at Diablo East is restricted to visitors with camping permits.

We are pleased that all regular and group campgrounds at Amistad National Recreation Area will remain open on Easter weekend. The campgrounds were closed for the last two years on Easter weekend due to the COVID pandemic. We need everyone’s assistance to keep the campgrounds clean by putting garbage in the trash cans.

Campgrounds will still accept cash payments at this time, but eventually will be transitioned to a cashless system.

Effective June 1, 2022, the recreation area’s visitor center will be going cashless. This will provide efficiencies, such as improving internal controls, reducing the time it takes to count cash, and eliminating the need to transport cash to the bank.

Visitors will be able to purchase America the Beautiful passes, as well as hunting permits and lake use passes with a credit or debit card. Credit/debit cards will also be the only form of payment for books, ballcaps, and other merchandise. No cash will be accepted.

Many non-visitors have been utilizing the sanitary dump station at Diablo East, some of whom have been putting banned items, such as cooking oil and motor oil into the system. These items are not meant for sewage treatment and cause wear and tear on the pumps, which results in them malfunctioning. This creates an undue financial burden on taxpayers.

The dump station is only for Amistad National Recreation Area visitors with a camping permit. Persons must have their camping permit with them when using the dump station, or they may be subject to a fine.

These changes will simplify and improve park processes. Park visitors are encouraged to plan ahead to maximize their experience in their national recreation area!
