Chairman Thompson Statement on DHS Designating Haiti for TPS Status

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Homeland Security on May 23, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that Haitians will be eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS):

“I am pleased that the Biden Administration has made Haitians - who face violence and destabilization in their home country - eligible for Temporary Protected Status. It was clear this move was necessary even though the previous Administration cruelly attempted to revoke TPS for Haitians. This is yet another example of this Administration taking steps to ensure our immigration system is humane and in line with our American values."
