Congratulations to the summer 2022 Isle Royale artists-in-residence

Isle Royale National Park is proud to announce the summer 2022 artists-in-residence. This year’s selections include:

  • Nathan Cornelius (Philadelphia, PA, music composition)
  • Elizabeth Rose (Springfield, IL, print media)
  • Lisa Truax (Winona, MN, ceramics)
  • Tracy Zeman (Birmingham, MI, writing)
Four alternates were chosen:

  • Abigail Ahlberg (Minneapolis, MN, weaving)
  • Matt Kania (Duluth, MN, oil painting)
  • Laura Polette (Berea, KY, watercolor)
  • John Sichel (Mountainside, NJ, music composition)
One past artist-in-residence, Michelle Menting (poetry, 2017), will be returning to assist with the Isle Royale Teen Artist Exploration.

Isle Royale received 124 applications for the 2022 program. Artists in many mediums displayed professionalism, creativity, and a mix of traditional and modern art styles. The jury’s selections were based on artistic integrity, creativity, ability to reside in a wilderness environment, and how an artist would relate and interpret the park through their work.

The artists chosen for the Teen Artist Exploration include:

  • Elizabeth Bergstrom (Chassell, MI)
  • Carly Goodlund (McFarland, WI)
Three alternates were chosen:

  • Grace Fritz (Maple Lake, MN)
  • Gabrielle Myers (Hancock, MI)
  • Ethan Sorenson (White Bear Lake, MN)
The Isle Royale Teen Artist Exploration provides teens the opportunity to develop their art through experiencing wilderness, and is open to all visual and performing artists, writers, and composers ages 13 to 18 at time of participation.

These programs are co-sponsored by Isle Royale National Park, Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association, and the Copper Country Community Arts Council. More information can be at www.nps.gov/isro/getinvolved/artist-in-residence.
