The Bureau of Land Management announced a free tour of the Indian Lakes Off-Range Wild Horse and Burro Corral, that will be open to the public starting May 13.

The community can come down and see the wild horses and burros that have been removed from overpopulated areas in Oregon and Nevada, according to an April 14 news release.

“The BLM's Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program Team recently visited the Indian Lakes off-range corral,” Supervisory Facility Operations Manager John Neill said in the release. “BLM takes pride in the welfare of wild horses and burros in regard to humane care and treatment within our off-range holding facilities, and I encourage all who are interested to sign up for this public tour to see the facility, animals and the care that is provided for them.”

This opportunity was last available in October 2019. In November, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported on one of the two opportunities to visit that are usually offered annually. The publication quoted Jason Lutterman, who was then a BLM public affairs specialist for the horse program.

"There’s a lot of misinformation out there, like people who work for BLM don’t like horses and want to get rid of them," Lutterman said to Reno Gazette-Journal. "I’ve found that patently false. We’re huge horse lovers. We’re actually saving them. If we were not out there managing them, every herd would eventually overtake caring capacity of that land."

Animals at the Indian Lakes Corral are made available to the public for adoption or purchase throughout the year at off-site adoption and sale events and through BLM’s Online Corral website, which is available here.
