Robert S. Canestrari has been named special agent in charge (SAIC) of the U.S. Secret Service Seattle Field Office. With more than 20 years of experience with the Secret Service, Mr. Canestrari most recently served as the assistant special agent in charge (ASAIC) on the Presidential Protective Division.
Promoted to ASAIC in 2019, Mr. Canestrari oversaw protective operations in support of President Donald Trump and President Joseph Biden. In addition to his responsibilities to the protective mission, Mr. Canestrari also managed the administrative sections for the Presidential Protective Division, including budget, information technology, property and administrative operations.
SAIC Canestrari’s supervisory credentials started as an assistant to the special agent in charge (ATSAIC) in the Protective Intelligence and Assessment Division where he managed the operations section, protective detail liaison section, and intelligence agency liaison section. In 2017 Mr. Canestrari transferred to the Washington Field Office as the protection squad ATSAIC where he mentored a unit of more than 50 newly graduated special agents tasked with supporting protection details in the National Capital Region. Other leadership positions included assignments as the ATSAIC of the Washington Field Office administration and training squad which managed budget, facilities and in-service training.
SAIC Canestrari began his career with the U.S. Secret Service in the Seattle Field Office in 2002 and held various roles within the agency throughout his special agent career. In 2010 Mr. Canestrari transferred to the Dignitary Protection Division in Washington D.C. and year a later he reported to serve on the Presidential Protective Division for President Barack Obama.
As a special agent, Mr. Canestrari’s accomplishments include leading domestic and foreign presidential protective advances; investigating criminal cases involving fraud, identity theft, and counterfeit U.S. currency; coordinating all protective intelligence case work along with leadership positions on the Cyber Crime Task Force and Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Prior to joining the Secret Service, Mr. Canestrari spent 14 years in the corporate technology sector in progressively more complex leadership roles, and graduated from Bucknell University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature.
