Volunteers Needed for National Park Clean-up on Earth Day

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Celebrate Earth Day by spending the morning at the second annual Indiana Dunes Trash Trekkers Earth Day Clean-up. This year’s event is on Friday, April 22nd, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and is sponsored by the Friends of Indiana Dunes, Indiana Dunes Tourism, Mermaid Straw, and Indiana Dunes National Park’s Volunteer Office.

Family, friends, neighbors, and park employees will join forces to collect a winter’s worth of trash and debris from roadsides, beaches, the Little Calumet River, and the trails of Indiana Dunes Country to help beautify the parks and make the region a cleaner place to live.  “Participating in the cleanup is a great way to take pride in your community, celebrate the spring, and enjoy your neighborhood national park” said Volunteer Program Manager Jim Whitenack.

To be assigned to a cleanup location, just show up at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center between 9:00 am – noon on April 22nd. The center is located at 1215 N. State Road 49, in Porter, Indiana.  Volunteer crews then go out to collect and bag trash. The bags are later picked up by Indiana Dunes National Park staff.
