Murray Statement on the House Passage of GOP Legislation to Undermine Families’ Health Care

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Jan. 6, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed legislation to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood. Republicans in the Senate previously passed the legislation, which President Obama will veto.

“Over the last few years, we’ve made real progress toward building a health care system that works for families and puts their needs first. But the work isn’t over-far from it-and families across the country have been very clear that they want Congress to work together to build on the Affordable Care Act with policies that continue to make health care more affordable, expand coverage, and improve quality of care. That’s why it has been so disappointing to see Republicans try, time and time again, to turn families’ health care into a political football. With today’s vote in the House, I hope Republicans will finally drop their bizarre political effort to undermine families’ health care, and instead, work with Democrats on policies that move our health care system forward, not backward, for the families and communities we serve."
