WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray, top Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued the following statement on reports that the Trump Administration failed this week to provide a public update on active investigations into campus sexual assault, which the Office for Civil Rights within the Department of Education has provided consistently over the last two years.
“To be very clear, the Trump Administration is taking office with absolutely zero credibility on the issue of sexual assault. Their silence this week regarding active sexual assault cases on campus unfortunately speaks volumes, and comes on the heels of troubling indications from Ms. DeVos about her commitment to standing with survivors. The Administration should resume public updates on these cases immediately and know that they will be held accountable, every step of the way, for any failure to adequately protect the rights of survivors."
According the Centers for Disease Control, one in five women will experience sexual assault while in college. The Senate HELP Committee held a bipartisan hearing on the issue of campus sexual assault in July 2015.
